Recycled Building Blocks
What you need:
Scissors
Tape
Glue
Recycled Boxes: cereal boxes, cracker boxes, coffee cans, Pringles containers, any closed container you have, and with different sizes and shapes (don’t break
them down as you collect them – they will be sturdier)
Clear Contact Paper (keeps the blocks nicer longer but not
necessary)
Ideas for filling the blocks to make them sturdier: Old
grocery bags, used tissue paper, old pillow stuffing… Be resourceful!
Ideas for covering the blocks: Leftover/used wrapping paper,
used newspapers, construction paper… Be
creative!
Ideas for pictures to decorate the blocks: magazines, used
gift bags, left over baby announcements, newspapers, pictures of the family,
your child’s drawings, old Valentines… Again, be creative!
This activity does take some time, but it was very rewarding
in the end. Get your kids involved, they
will love stuffing the boxes and helping with the tape. They can color and
decorate the boxes however they want!
How to make your own blocks:
1) Stuff the box so that it is sturdier but not too much or the box will puff out. Tape shut– I used old grocery bags. Other ideas: fill the boxes with bells, old rattles, or shakers for different sounds and a different experience for the child.

2)
Cover the box in your choice of wrapping just
like a present.Wrap it as tight as you can so the edges stay flat.
3)
Decorate the boxes and glue on pictures. Let
your kids draw on them or cut out some of their drawings
4)
Cover with contact paper so the blocks last
longer. It protects from spills, slobber, and curious hands. You can get contact paper at a craft store or office supply
store (about $3 a roll).

Dinner Time Conversation Starter!
One of my favorite games to play is called "Worst, Best, Funniest." I like this game because it opens up conversation and gives you insight into your family that you may not have gotten otherwise.
You go around the table and everyone says the worst thing that happened to them during their day, then the best, then the funniest. I have done this with families with children as young as 3. Even if it doesn't make sense, the kids are contributing to the conversation!

I have done this without the Valentine's idea as well. I put them in old muffin tins.
